Year 6

At Woodland Grange, we strive to make Year 6 as fun and memorable as we can, through our varied curriculum and additional experiences. Whilst we know that they face a tough series of assessments at the end of the year, we want our pupils to enjoy themselves along the way. We hope that they will leave us as independent, creative learners, feeling prepared about the next steps in their education and confident within themselves.

This week, most of Year 6 will be on their residential trip to Kingswood! The children remaining at school will have a busy week with Mrs Bailey and Mrs James. They will complete a project on the history of Norfolk, prepare and enjoy an afternoon tea (after learning all about the etiquette of afternoon tea in the Victorian era and writing formal invitations, as well as using their understanding of imperial and metric measures to adapt recipes), and compose their own musical piece inspired by the Victorian circus.

This week, we will be holding a mock SATs week. This is to give us a baseline of the children’s understanding at the start of Year 6, so that we are able to track their progress over the course of the year when we complete future assessments. Please reassure your child, as we will be doing in the classroom, that it is not something we want them to feel anxious about. As the purpose of this assessment week is purely to establish a baseline for each child, we will not be sharing their results outside of Year 6 teaching staff. We would be very grateful if you could avoid working through past papers with your child, as we use these to inform our intervention groups and would not want your child to miss out.

PE:
Our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. The children can come into school wearing their PE kit on these days. Please ensure your child is not wearing any jewellery on PE days.

Homework:
The children will receive arithmetic homework every Friday, due in the following Friday. Spellings will now be handed out on a Tuesday, with the children being tested the following Tuesday.

Reading:

In Year 6, we have lots of exciting and challenging texts on our bookshelves, which can be enjoyed at school and at home (as long as they are returned when finished!). We expect children to read at least five times a week, for a period of twenty minutes - or longer!

To support your child's reading, we have attached the reading VIPERS pack which contains suggested questions that can be asked, or used as a conversation starter about any book.
