The number of children in looked after care has been rising steadily in the UK. In 2016 it was just over 70,000 children. As with all our pupils, Woodland Grange is committed to helping every looked after child to achieve the highest standards they can, including all aspects of their education. This can be measured by improvements in their academic achievement and progress as well as their outlook, attitude to learning and attendance.

The Department for Education Pupil Premium Plus (PPP) allocation for the 2020/21 financial year (April 2020 to March 2021) for children in care is £2,345 per eligible pupil (children that have been in local authority care for 1 day or more). Funding for these pupils is managed by the local authority that looks after the child.
Schools also receive additional funding for any pupil identified in the spring school census as having left local-authority care because of one of the following:
- adoption
- a special guardianship order (SGO)
- a child arrangements order
- a residence order
